Addicted to You

Publication Date: June 25, 2013
Genre: New Adult/Contemporary Romance

~Synopsis~
When twenty-one-year-old Leah Carter's latest one night stand burglarizes her apartment, her roommate forces her to attend therapy for sex addicts. Leah insists she isn't a sex addict; she just doesn't do relationships. After all, sooner or later, everyone lets you down.

At first, the group sessions are little more than an education on how to be promiscuous. Until she meets the newest addict—blue eyes, killer body, and a smile that tempts relapse.

Psychology student Will McLean is posing as a fellow addict while researching a case study on unusual addictions. But the more he learns about Leah, the more certain he is that his desire to break through her walls and unearth her secrets has nothing to do with his assignment.

As the uncertainties spike alongside the sexual tension, the only thing Leah knows for sure is that falling in love would be disastrous. Too bad love might be one addiction she can't kick.

~Review~

Addicted to you was a quick, fun and fascinating read. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the plot and I loved the idea of two people meeting in a nympho therapy group. Not the best place to get a date if you know what I mean.

Leah was a character with 2 sides. I liked that she was compassionate and loving towards her brother. She really cared for him and she made sure he was taken care of. However, she was also cold and judgy. She never felt like she had a problem and she judged everyone else in the therapy group who did legitimately have sex addictions. She also was very closed off with Will and I was surprised by his desire to pursue considering how she acted. While I found her a bit off putting, I understand why. Her parents are so closed off and distant. She practically raises her little brother and her parents seem to care less about either of them. It was actually really sad and it made me sympathize with Leah a little more. Because of her lonely childhood, she is closed off to love but there is something about Will that makes her want more from him. This scares her and she tries to push him away.

"Who decided sex was an addiction anyway? Or that someone should need therapy to "fix it"? Sex was good for you. It was a de-stresser. If it wasn't, then you were doing it wrong."

Will seems to be an all around good guy and I really liked him. Plus, he's Scottish so I can totally imagine the sexy accent. While he is in the therapy class solely as an experiment for his psych degree, he is instantly drawn to Leah. He can see that there  is something deeper that drives Leah's demeanor and he wants to be the one to break through to her. Just like Leah, he has parents who are less than thrilled about filling that role and he too had a lonely and depraved child hood. This helps him understand Leah better.

Finn, Will's best friend and former roommate was a fun secondary character and I really liked him. He told it like it was and he added some comic relief. While he was laid back and easy going, he held his own romantic drama that will be explored further in his own book. Helena, Leah's roommate was also very likable. She obviously cared deeply for Leah and she asked her to do the therapy because she could see how emotionless sex was sub consciously affected Leah emotionally. She knew she wasn't an addict but she needed Leah to see the effects her decisions were having.

My two favorite things about this book were 1) Leah's relationship with her little brother and 2) the interactions in sex therapy. While Leah is in the therapy class at the request of her room mate since a one night stand robbed them, the other people in the class are legitimate addicts and some of their stories were wild and entertaining. The counselor really wanted to help these people overcome their addiction and his reactions to some of their antics was entertaining. He was truly appalled by some of the crazy things these people have done just to have sex. Being as the class was anonymous, I loved the nicknames she had for the other group members. Leah is like a mother to her little brother and she makes sure that he is taken care of. He is ignored by his parents and it is so sad that a 9 year old is as lonely as he is. Even though Leah gives him everything he needs, a child still needs the love and acceptance of their parents. I liked the way her brother, Elijah, bonded with Will. It was another crack he was able to put into Leah's armor and got Will that much closer to winning her over.

"Will could only imagine what someone had to be caught doing to be sent to sex addiction therapy. Best not to linger on that."

Overall, I enjoyed following Will and Leah as they brought light into each other's lonely lives and Will cracked the cold hard surface around Leah's heart. The plot was fun but also had some emotional depth that made it easier to connect with the characters and enjoy their journey.

Feature & Follow Friday Blog Hop #23

Feature and Follow Friday is a weekly meme/feature hosted by Alison Can Read & Parajunkee.

This week's topic is:

If you could only have ONE – one book – for the rest of your life. Don’t cheat…what would it be?

Wow, this is a tough question this week. One book?!! I guess if I HAVE to choose only one, I would pick:

Are you There God, It's Me Margaret by Judy Blume

This was a pivotal book for me in junior high and I have always loved this book. It is perhaps one of my all time favorites forever. This book taught me all about being a 12 year old girl and transitioning into a woman.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn't tear us apart...

We made our own rules and surrendered completely to the exquisite power of possession?

~Prelude~
Amazon has this amazing thing called Whispersync that allows you to buy discounted audio books from Audible.com if you already own the eBook. It isn't available for all titles but lucky for me, they had it on The Crossfire series. I usually listen to audiobooks in my car on the way to work but there were times when I just could not wait until the next morning to see what happens and I had to pick up my Kindle and read. Because of that, I ended up reading and listening to the series simultaneously. It was definitely an interesting experience.

~Review~

This series.... I am at a loss for words right now as I process this review. I liked it, I mean I really liked it but I also had major issues with it. More specifically, I had major issues with Gideon and Eva. The writing was excellent and the plot was fascinating. Oh and the sex was steamy, insanely steamy. However, I have never encountered 2 characters with so many personal issues that getting involved with one another is utterly the worst idea imaginable.

I could dig Eva. She was a sweet girl who wanted to build her own life and make her own decisions despite her crazy, controlling mother. Don't get me started on her, I'll rant about that later. Anyways, back to Eva. She has been through some very traumatic experiences that led to a rebellious stage. She is working really hard to get her life back on track and live normally. Then she meets Gideon Cross. She will never have a normal life again. When it comes to Gideon, I found Eva way too emotional and borderline annoying. With everything that happens between them by the end of EWY, you would think they'd been together for years instead of only 2 months. With everything Eva goes through, she needs stability and Gideon Cross is the opposite of that.

Gideon is the epitome of anti-commitment. The guy is rich, handsome and the ultimate alpah-male. However, he has some SERIOUS issues. He's only ever used women for sex but something about Eva draws him to her and he finds himself wanting more. He would do anything to be with her and protect her. Sometimes his actions showed that and other times they were the exact opposite. Let's take sex as an example. He uses sex to show Eva how much he loves her because he can't say the words but then he turns around and uses sex as punishment when he is angry at her. I like an alpha male, but Gideon Cross is too much for me.

Ok, Eva's mother. Let's start with how bat-shit crazy she is. I mean putting tracking devices on your 24 year old daughter? Oh, hell no! Also, she is shallow and selfish and downright irritating. The narrator even added to my annoyance of her with the voice she used to convey her. I did like her roommate and best friend, Carey. He is super supportive and always there for Eva. However, he had his issues too and I didn't always agree with his decisions. Let's just face it, EVERYONE in this book had issues. There are too many side characters to go into detail about but I'll list them and you can see how they may have added to the drama that filled these novels. We have Gideon's jealous younger brother, Christopher, his ex-fiance Corrine, who left her husband and came back to NYC for Gideon, and Eva's ex-boyfriend, Brett, who is now a rock star and wrote a love song about her. Imagine the trouble these people caused Gideon and Eva.

Gideon and Eva have the bumpiest relationship I have ever encountered. As I mentioned earlier, with all the crap that goes down between these 2, I had almost forgotten only 2 months have passed since they met. Every time things seem to be going well between them and they are happy, the ball drops; and it shatters. Gideon is constantly pushing Eva over the edge and away from him only to come groveling back and she falls for it. Every. Single. Time. They had incredible sex and I can't believe it is possible to have as much sex as they do. There's just no way. Great sex isn't enough though and Eva needs Gideon to open up to her emotionally, not just physically. That is hard for him to do because he doesn't like to be vulnerable. He wants everything from Eva but he isn't always willing to give that back to her from him. The more time he spends with Eva, the more he realizes he absolutely can't live with out her and he does open himself to her. While he can be over the top at times, I really did feel his love for her and towards the end he really did let his actions say the words he couldn't. While they are happy right now, this series is far from over and most likely more drama will ensue. I don't think it's possible to have anymore but considering everything else, I'm inclined to believe it is. We'll see what else can go wrong.

Overall, I enjoyed these books and it was really fun to read and listen at the same time. If you've read the books, you can understand some of the awkwardness that may come with listening to certain parts instead of reading them. While frustrating and over the top at times, the plot was still really interesting and it definitely kept me coming back for more craziness.

Girl on Tour
Kylie Ryans #2
Author: Caisey Quinn
Publication Date: August 27, 2013
Genre: New Adult/Contemporary Romance

~Synopsis~
An up and comer trying to make a name for herself...

KYLIE never expected to be stuck on a tour bus with a pampered princess and her boyfriend’s ex.

A troubled artist struggling to hold onto his career...

TRACE thought he was finally getting to do things his way. Until the label added co-headliner Gretchen Gibson, the only person in country music with more issues than him, to his No Apologies tour.

Surrounded by tabloid rumors and people they can't trust, Kylie and Trace need each other more than ever. But the choices they make will change everything.

Because chasing your dreams and following your heart don’t always lead you to the same place…

~Prelude~
I absolutely loved Girl With Guitar and fell in love with this series and these characters right away. This was the first #GwB twitter read along the girls and I did and that makes this series even more special to me. I am so happy to be a part of this tour and share my love of Kylie and Trace.

~Review~

This is a three book series and Caisey warned me that book 1 is happily ever for now and book 3 will be happily ever after but book 2 would break me. She wasn’t kidding and even though I was warned, I still wasn’t prepared for the emotions I would feel and the book hangover that ensued.

After struggling with their feelings and overcoming the obstacles, Trace and Kyle have reunited, only to now be separated again. Kylie is joining the Vitamin Water Tour and Trace is getting ready to start his No Apologies Tour. They will be apart for 12 weeks, with opportunities to see each other only coming around a few times when their tours cross path. They are determined to make the distance work and Trace is resolute to quit drinking and be a better man, a man that Kylie deserves. However, distance and temptation threaten to break everything they’ve re-built and they both learn how difficult being together in the spotlight really can be.

Kylie is still the same kick-ass, tell it like it is chick and I loved her even more after this book.  She still acts first and thinks later when it comes to her emotions and the decisions that she makes but that is Kylie and I don’t think I’d like her as much if she was different, even when I want to scream at her for it. She recognizes this in herself but is strong about doing what is right, consequences be damned. She loves Trace, flaws and all, and she never tries to change him. She only wants him to stop drinking because of what it does to him and his family. She would never try to change the person that he is because that is who she fell in love with. Despite jealousy and her in-ability to ignore the media and tabloids, she works really hard at her relationship with Trace. I was disappointed in her when she didn’t recognize Trace’s real feelings when he was pushing her away. I wanted her to fight harder for him but I understand the insecurities she still feels in their relationship and he definitely played that to his advantage.

“I’m from Oklahoma, honey. I can bless your heart and hate your guts all at the same time.”

Trace is a man that must grow on you. He was a total dick and a selfish drunk in Girl With Guitar but when his past and his home life was delved into more, it was so much easier to understand his actions and the persona he put on. I couldn’t help falling for him in spite of his actions because it was all a front for a man that was just afraid of becoming someone he never wanted to be. He opened up to Kylie, allowed her into his carefully guarded heart and in turn saw so much more in himself. Despite his many mistakes in Girl On Tour and the poor decisions that he made, I couldn’t help falling for him more. He wanted to quit drinking and be a better man for Kylie and it made me so sad that he never felt good enough for her, even though she always told him he was. He was so hard on himself and held so much self-loathing and contempt for himself and it crushed me as he spiraled downwards.

“I’ve never wanted anything like I want you. Not a drink, not a drug, not even music. Not a single damned thing, Kylie.”

Kylie and Trace have a very delicate relationship and being apart and in the media spotlight is not easy on it. Trace is trying to straighten out and Kylie is his sounding board but being away from her makes it really hard for him to stay straight. It also doesn’t help that he is touring with Gretchen Gibson, the “female version” of him, as Kylie puts it. She puts a lot of stress and pressure on Trace and without Kylie around, his self-control is tested and he ultimately fails. When it comes to Gretchen, Trace makes some poor decisions that put a lot of strain on the relationship. His heart is in the right place but he didn't always think about the affect those actions would have. Gretchen carried around demons that she only shared with Trace and despite her actions and attitude, she never tried to intentionally cause problems for Trace and Kylie and I actually felt bad for her towards the end. Kylie is on tour with a sixteen year old drama queen, Lily Taite, and Trace’s ex, Mia Montgomery, who seems to be holding a grudge. The tension on the bus, along with being away from Trace so much, starts to get to Kylie. For most of the book, I was not a fan of Mia. She seemed like a stuck up bitch and she held a intense grudge and hatred for Kylie without any real explanation. However, towards the end, she changed and her and Kylie came to terms with each other. In fact, I have a feeling she will be a great friend and source of support for Kylie in book 3.

“If you give everything you have to other people and they don’t have anything to give you in return… you end up with nothing. Not a single thing.”

This book slowly broke me as I watched the separation and Trace’s loss of control disintegrate their relationship. They loved each other so much but Trace couldn’t keep it together and my heart shattered as he pushed Kylie away and made some tough decisions in the end. Kylie was so heartbroken and vulnerable and she failed to recognize what Trace was really doing. I understood Trace's reasons for what he did and I loved him for his fierce desire to protect Kylie but I wish he could have seen himself the way she did and recognized the love she had for him. The final 2 chapters seriously left a lump in my throat that I had to swallow down to keep from crying. The most amazing thing about this series is the incredibly emotional story that is being told and the writing is so well done that I feel like I am right there with the characters, feeling all their emotions. There is nothing better than a book that plays like a movie in my head and this series does just that. I can picture every character and every moment as if I’m living it and that is the kind of story that leaves me reeling for days. The final book, Girl in Love, is by far, my most anticipated release for 2014.
