~Synopsis~
When a gorgeous young dancer walks through his door, a strip club owner must decide whether to follow his rules or his heart in the third novel by the author of One Tiny Lie and Ten Tiny Breaths.

Owning a strip club isn’t the fantasy most guys expect it to be. With long hours, a staff with enough issues to keep a psych ward in business, and the police regularly on his case, twenty-nine-year-old Cain is starting to second guess his unspoken mission to save the women he employs. And then blond, brown-eyed Charlie Rourke walks through his door, and things get really complicated. Cain abides by a strict “no sleeping with the staff” rule. But being around Charlie challenges Cain’s self-control…and it’s been a long time since any woman has done that.

Twenty-two-year-old Charlie Rourke needs a lot of money, really fast, in order to vanish before it’s too late. Taking her clothes off for men makes her stomach curl but Charlie tells herself that at least she’s putting her acting and dancing skills to good use. And though her fellow dancers seem eager to nab their sexy, sophisticated, and genuinely caring boss, she’s not interested. After all, Charlie Rourke doesn’t really exist—and the girl pretending to be her can't get distracted by romance.

Unfortunately, Charlie soon discovers that developing feelings for Cain is inevitable, and that those feelings may not be unrequited—but losing him when he finds out what she’s involved with will be more painful than any other sentence awaiting her.

~Review~

I just have to start off by saying, "Wow! K.A. Tucker has done it again." I would never have guessed the depth and character development that could have come from Cain but I absolutely loved hearing his story and getting to know him. He is such an enigma in the first two books but there is so much to him and the experiences that have made him the man he is.

At 29, Cain is gorgeous, smart, generous and very successful. While he does run and own a strip club, he is unlike any other strip club owner out there and I think he does it more to help the women who work for him than he does for the money. It's a tough business and you can't save everyone but Cain is going to try his hardest. When Charlie walks into his club, he is hit with memories of the past he has longed to overcome. However, there is something different about her and he can't deny the attraction and longing he has for her. Charlie is just as intrigued and attracted to Cain but she is hiding a huge secret and living a double life and she isn't sure Cane could forgive her if he found out.

To be honest, I wasn't sure how I would feel about Cain. I guess it's fair to say that he isn't prevalent enough in Ten Tiny Breaths or One Tiny Lie to make a judgment but I was definitely surprised by how quickly I came to really like him. Honestly, the first chapter in this book took my breath away and 3% in, I already had chills. Cain has definitely been through a lot in his young life and the fact that he has become the man he is was totally amazing to me. I also really love the way he looks out for the girls that work for him and he isn't just another sleazy strip club owner. He wants to help them get on their feet and get out of this life. He doesn't use them or take advantage of them and that says so much about his character. He is definitely a guarded man so watching his walls slowly crumble with Charlie was fantastic and I loved it.

I was immediately intrigued by Charlie and the mystery that is this woman. She is definitely hiding something and when I found out what she was involved in, my heart sank into my stomach. She is living a life she has no control of and she is stuck in a situation that seems almost impossible to get out of. Her only option is to save enough money to disappear and never be found. With everything that she has to go through and has been through, I found her to be incredibly brave and strong. She definitely knows how to handle herself in a difficult situation that most girls her age wouldn't be able to. This is what leads her to Cain's club and ultimately Cain himself. Falling for him was never in her plans and she fights hard to deny her attraction and feelings because she knows she can't stick around.

We get some brief appearances from the characters we know and love like Kacie, Livie, Trent, Storm, Dan, Ben and Tanner. I loved the way the group opened up for Charlie and let her in with no questions asked. Charlie really started to feel like she had a home and friends to care about and that was huge for her. We really get more acquainted with Cane's bartender, Ginger, who becomes a really good friend to Charlie. I loved Ginger and her feisty attitude. She genuinely cares about Charlie as well as Cain. She’s always giving both of them some great advice and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Cain and Charlie are 2 people who have a bit of a sordid past. They each have demons that haunt them a little and cause them both to be guarded with those around them. Cain is a protector through and through and when he meets Charlie, his need to protect comes out in full force. He knows she is hiding something and there is more to her than she lets on but he doesn't care about her past or what she's done. He wants to know who she is and he finds himself desperately wanting to be her future. The situations Charlie was put in over and over really made me nervous and I was always waiting for the ball to drop and things to go terribly wrong. I also really liked the slow build of Charlie and Cain’s relationship and the constant sexual tension. The longer they try to deny what’s flowing between them, the more palpable the tension became.  Just when they finally give in to the temptation and express their desires to one another, shit hit the fan and Charlie faced an impossible situation. I loved how hard Cain fought for her and that he didn’t just give up and let her go. Cain doesn’t let many people in so when he does, you know that person is important to him.

I don't know that I adequately expressed how I felt about this book. While it isn't my favorite in the series, it definitely holds its own and I was instantly enthralled. I know I mentioned this above, but the first chapter was just incredible. It really set the tone for the book and hooked me. I was glad I started this on a Saturday because there was no way I was putting it down until I finished. Unlike the other books, this one is written in dual POV and I loved that. Considering everything going on with Charlie, I think it was necessary and I don't think it would have worked any other way. As always, the writing is fantastic, the characters are well developed and the plot is captivating and full of surprises.

ARC Review: Keep You From Harm by Debra Doxer

Keep You From Harm
(Remedy, Volume 1)
Author: Debra Doxer
Publisher: Self-published
Publication Date: September 25, 2013
Genre: Paranormal Contemporary Romance
Source: eARC via ATOMR Tours

~Synopsis~
Secrets…

They weigh you down. I’ve kept a secret all my life. It’s my mother’s secret, too. I inherited it from her along with a unique ability that only we possess. She’s gone now, another victim of addiction. If her death isn’t enough to bring me to my knees, her betrayal flays me to the bone. Because the secret my mother and I have been keeping is just one of many she’d kept. She never told me I have an older brother. And now he’s here, eager to be my guardian.

There is no one else. So I move across the country to live with this stranger, my brother. But experience has taught me that most situations are temporary and forming attachments only leads to hurt in the end. That’s why I’m determined to keep to myself in this new place, struggling to seem aloof while I’m quietly breaking apart.

Then I meet Lucas…

His magnetism is hard to resist, and most girls at school aren’t resisting. I don’t fall so easily though, especially not for guys who use their good looks as a weapon. From the start, our interactions are tense and volatile. I know it’s because I’m denying the unwelcome desire that grips me when he’s near. I think he feels it, too. He looks at me with an intensity that threatens to unhinge my resolve. Soon he’s trying to break through the walls that past hurts have built.

But I’m not what I appear to be, and it wouldn’t be fair to get involved with him. At least that’s what I tell myself. Until a terrible act of violence reveals that Lucas has a secret, too. It’s a secret that links us together and ties us to an evil history I could never have imagined.

~Review~

I love mixing in a good paranormal romance every once and a while on top of all the NA and Contemporaries that I read. Keep You From Harm was definitely a good choice. I really liked the mix between the paranormal element and the contemporary romance side. Neither genre overshadowed the other and I really liked the way the paranormal element was incorporated into the story.

Raielle is a senior in high school and after her mother dies, she is sent from San Diego to New York to live with her older brother Kyle, who she didn't even know existed until her mother's death. She is instantly connected Lucas and feels drawn to him but she quickly denies it. Raielle carries a secret that her mother warned her can be dangerous if people know about it so she keeps everyone at arm’s length. However, Lucas feels the connection too and he won't give up so easy. He wants to be with Raielle and he'll do anything to convince her it's meant to be. However, shocking discoveries and tragedy may take the decision out of their hands.

Raielle is smart, confident and can stand on her own. She sticks to herself and doesn't really get close to people but she also isn't a push over either. I loved the way she held her own and how strong she was considering everything she had been through. While she had a tough upbringing and she was used to taking care of herself, she still loved her mother and losing her was tough. I think it was even harder on her because she had such conflicting emotions about her mom. She loved her but she was angry to find out that her mom had kept so many secrets from her. I could tell Raielle was really guarded so I liked seeing her open up a bit to her brother and his family as well as her new friends, Miles, Gwen and of course Lucas. I loved how well she held herself together and played it cool with her emotions when she was dealing with Lucas.

"Emotions are dangerous. So are expectations."

I liked Lucas but I also felt like he was more moody than a girl on PMS. He seriously ran so hot and cold that it was ridiculous. He felt this connection to Raielle too and he made sure she gave him a chance and then he turned around acted like a dick. I felt like Lucas really grew as a character and redeemed himself. Clearly he messed up and he knew it. He worked extra hard to prove himself to Raielle and he definitely showed how much he cared for her. Lucas also had a lot going on in his life and when we find out the personal issues he faces, it's sheds some insight into why he is a bit emotionally messed up. He is a loyal and loving big brother and I really liked that about him. He would do anything to protect his brother.

This book also had some really great side characters and I especially liked Miles, Gwen, and Kyle. Miles is Raielle's neighbor and the first friend she makes. He is a really good guy and he instantly connects with her. He is also Lucas' best friend and he looks out for both of them as they build their relationship. Gwen isn't one of the popular girls but Raielle has never cared about that and they instantly connect as friends. Gwen helps her open up a little bit and she encourages her to give Lucas a shot. However, when Lucas pulls a few dick moves, she is totally there for Ray. Kyle is Raielle's brother and I loved that he truly wanted to get to know her and be a big brother. He knows she hasn't had the greatest life and he wants her to feel like she is loved and has family. I never doubted his intentions with her. While I didn't particularly dislike Chloe, Kyle's wife, I did feel like she judged Raielle and didn't really take the time to get to know her. She assumed Raielle is messed up because of her childhood even though Ray does nothing but prove her wrong.

Raielle holds a secret power that she shared with her mother and was told never to tell anyone. While it is a special gift, it can also be dangerous and people would use her to exploit it. Upon her mother's death, she learns that her mom kept so many secrets from her and I was torn for her because it was obvious that it hurt her deeply. She will never have the chance to confront her mother about the secrets or find all the answers she is looking for. I know keeping this secret and having no one  to share in the burden with was tough for her so I was glad that Lucas discovered her secret and that he ended up being someone she could trust to confide in. As their relationship grew and they fell even more for each other, it was obvious that he would do anything to protect her. He definitely proved his feelings for her and I definitely became a fan of his. Raielle is truly a good person and she makes a huge sacrifice that was heart wrenching. The only way she knows how to change things is to find her real father and I loved that Lucas was willing to drop everything to help her. While the ending wasn't a huge cliffhanger, it definitely left things hanging in the air and I'm desperate to know how it's all going to play out. I guess I'll have to wait for book 2!

Overall, I really enjoyed Keep You From Harm a lot and found it very intriguing from beginning to end. It is well written with a nicely developed plot that flowed really well. I was constantly intrigued by Raielle and wanted to know more about her secret. Even though we learn about her abilities early on, there is still so much to learn about it and I loved how the author incorporated it into the story. I haven't read another paranormal romance quite like this one and I am definitely hooked to this series.

Novella Review: Finding Cinderella by Colleen Hoover

Finding Cinderella
(Hopeless 2.5)
Author: Colleen Hoover
Publisher: Atria Books
Publication Date: October 14, 2013
Genre: Contemporary
Source: Purchased

~Synopsis~
This novella is a companion novel to the Hopeless series, but can be read as a standalone.

A chance encounter in the dark leads eighteen-year-old Daniel and the girl who stumbles across him to profess their love for each other. But this love comes with conditions: they agree it will only last one hour and it will only be make-believe.

When their hour is up and the girl rushes off like Cinderella, Daniel tries to convince himself that what happened between them only seemed perfect because they were pretending it was perfect. Moments like that with girls like her don’t happen outside of fairytales.

One year and one bad relationship later, his disbelief in insta-love is stripped away the day he meets Six: a girl with a strange name and an even stranger personality. Daniel soon realizes the way he pretended to feel about Cinderella and the way he really feels about Six may not be so different after all. Especially when the two loves of his life end up being one in the same.

Unfortunately for Daniel, finding Cinderella doesn’t guarantee their happily ever after…it only further threatens it.

~Review~

I loved Hopeless and Losing Hope and I think Colleen Hoover has such an excellent writing style. She really knows how to pack a punch and create an emotional story full of twists. While Fining Cinderella is only a novella, Colleen still manages to include all of the elements that make her stories so fantastic.

Daniel and Six have this instant connection and he is definitely into her from the moment they meet. She is so different than most girls, especially his ex, who he has had a tumultuous relationship with over the last year. The more he gets to know her, the more he realizes how perfect she is for him. I really liked Daniel and his charming personality. We get to see it a little bit in Losing Hope but I loved how we really got to know Daniel in this novella. He is a bit of a smart ass and a joker. However, he is a really good friend and he has a really great relationship with his family which I really liked.

Six is fun, smart and laid back. She has spent the last year in Italy studying abroad and now that she is back, it seems that something happened while she was there that really changed her. She used to be all about casual sex and no relationships but she doesn’t want to be that girl anymore. There is something about Daniel that she can’t resist and I loved watching her build a relationship with him. She didn’t have to have sex or be overly intimate with him for them to have a connection and it was so great to see that Six was happy.

One year ago, Daniel had an amazing hour with a mystery girl in the dark janitor closet. He has never forgotten her but resigned to the fact that he may never find her again. When he discovers that Six is one and the same, he couldn’t be happier. However, Six doesn’t react with the same enthusiasm and my heart broke for Daniel and when she took off. His dreams have finally come true and he doesn’t understand why Six would react the way she did. When she reveals her reason for being so upset, I was honestly very shocked. I didn’t see the twist coming and I was a little disappointed in the way Daniel reacted. Once I got over his initial reaction, I understood why he might freak out in the beginning. After he let himself process everything, he stepped up to the plate and gave Six the support and comfort she needed. I was super proud of him for that. They both proved their feelings for each other and showed that they could overcome anything.

While this was a novella, I should have known Colleen would find a way to sucker punch me with a shocking twist. Even in a short story, she still finds a way to almost bring me to tears and pack in an emotional storyline. I was super impressed with the development of the characters and the depth of the plot and even though I want more Daniel and Six because I love them, I was super happy with the conclusion.

~Synopsis~
Honor student, manager at the campus coffee shop, owner of an impressive sweater collection – Melanie Wilder has it all together. Then John “John Boy” Walden strolls into her life wearing nothing more than an impish grin and all-too-revealing loin cloth.

Soon, make-out sessions replace homework, lust triumphs over work. And to further crumble her perfect world, an unexpected phone call threatens to take away everything she’s worked for.

Now, as Melanie struggles to pick up the pieces, she realizes that John may be the only one to put her life back together…unless he shatters it first.

**This is not a sequel to The Only Exception. It's a companion novel with two characters from the first book. You don't need to read The Only Exception to understand this book.**

~Review~

John Boy and Melanie make a few appearances in The Only Exception, but never together and never significant enough to really get to know them. However, I liked both of them so I was eager to dive into their story and see how it all would unfold. I think I love them more than Trey and Monica and I am definitely in love with John Boy.

When Melanie meets John Boy, she is instantly attracted to him and finds his shameless flirting mesmerizing. John Boy is intrigued by Melanie and because she is different from any girl he’s ever met. He wants to show her one amazing night and break down her walls a bit to see her wild side. What he doesn’t count on is the way she sees him like no one else does and when tragedy strikes Melanie, she never counted on John Boy being the friend she needs. As their attraction mounts, both of their walls start to break down old habits and insecurities threaten to ruin it all.

I liked Melanie. She is smart, hardworking and a bit reserved. She was badly hurt by her previous boyfriend and that makes her a bit guarded. She definitely tries super hard to fight her attraction to John Boy but the more time she spends with him, the harder it is. She sees a side of him that most people don’t and she definitely likes what she sees. However, I think she definitely plays it safe and she is never really honest with herself or John Boy about her feelings for him. This made me sad because it was so obvious how he felt about her but she never really gave it a chance to blossom.

Oh, John Boy. I am definitely lusting after him. He is definitely a charmer and he immediately takes interest in Melanie. At first, it’s just a physical thing for him and he likes the challenge of letting loose the wild side of Melanie, who is so uptight and put together. However, I felt like the more he got to know her, the more he wanted her to really know him. He definitely puts on a show for everyone and there is a lot more to him that what people think. He definitely has a reputation but I think he hates being that guy and he doesn’t want to be judged by it.

I really adored the relationship between Melanie and John Boy and the amazing friendship that they created. Clearly they are both attracted to one another from the beginning and they definitely want to get physical to try and get each other out of their system. However, the more they got to know each other and let down their defenses, the emotional element of their relationship over ruled the physical. Tragedy strikes Melanie and John Boy is there for her in a way that most guys wouldn’t be. Considering he barely knows her, I was blown away by the kindness and support he showed. It was obvious he was falling for her even though he didn’t always make the best decisions or let his actions show it. However, there were plenty of times that it was so obvious to me and I wanted to shake Melanie for holding back when she felt the same way about him.

It was really hard watching Melanie cope with everything she had going on. Her life is turned upside down and it makes her really insecure and unsure of herself. I could totally understand why she felt that way and it made me so sad to see it get in her way with John Boy. She let her doubts and these insecurities hold her back from getting what she really wanted and what he would so gladly give to her. I wanted to be annoyed by her pity party and the way she was always feeling sorry for herself, but I put myself in her shoes and I could totally understand why she would feel that way. She always doubted John Boy’s attraction to her and his interest and after everything she goes through, she feels even more broken and damaged. John Boy constantly showed his support and I felt like he made his feelings for her pretty clear. When she finally pushed him too far and let all of her fears and insecurities get in the way, I was so afraid that he would walk away for good. In the end, John Boy proved himself to Melanie and to me and he finally broke down Melanie’s defense for good. I absolutely loved the ending to this book and the epilogue was truly beautiful.

Overall, I really loved everything about The Only One. It had a unique backstory behind the plot that held me captive and the development of the characters was truly fantastic. I really felt connected to Melanie and John Boy and I felt all of their emotions with them. I was actually sad when it was over because I just wasn’t ready to say good bye to them. I am definitely a fan of Magan and I can’t wait to read more of her books. With the holiday season on upon us, I’m looking forward to her new Christmas novella, Off The Market.
