Review: With a Twist by Sawyer Bennett

Author: Sawyer Bennett
Publisher: Big Dog Books, LLC
Publication Date: January 6th, 2015
Genre: New Adult
Source: Purchased via Amason

~Synopsis~
Wyatt Banks is ready to give one woman the world. Unfortunately, his job as a cop tends to interfere with other goals. When Wyatt is sent deep undercover to investigate a sex slave ring, he doesn’t have time to do anything but focus on staying alive in a dark and dangerous underworld.

Wyatt isn’t alone though in his quest to save the women that are being sold into sexual slavery.

His partner, FBI Agent Andrea Somerville, is immersed just as deeply as he is, and she’s the bait to lure the sex slavers out into the open, as she poses as an erotic dancer in an attempt to snare the enemy. But danger runs as high as the sparks between them, and now Wyatt is caught between the job he loves and the woman he wants.

~ Review~

I adore this series by Sawyer Bennett. I love the cocktail titles and the Atlantic beach setting. I love the strong female leads and the stubborn men who fall for them. However, this one didn't quite captivate me like the others.

I like Wyatt and he definitely has all the qualities that the other men have. I liked Andrea, she was another strong female lead; but for some reason I just didn't connect with these characters like I did the others or really get pulled into this book. I think it had an interesting plot line but it felt rushed and maybe a little shallow. I felt like it lacked some of the depth that the others in the series.

Wyatt and Andrea meet under abnormal circumstances but I think that is also what helped them connect. They both have tough jobs and they can understand each other better. It was apparent that there was a mutual attraction and I liked that Wyatt protected Andrea but didn't get all caveman on her. He understood her need to be able to do things on her own too and I liked that about him.

Andrea definitely had a desire for Wyatt and I think she kept her feelings in check well. However, I wanted her to let go a little. Fall for Wyatt and let him be the man she needed. For a strong woman, I felt that she held back too much when it came to her feelings.

While this wasn't my favorite in the series, I did still enjoy the book. I like Sawyer Bennett's writing style and I think this book was still well written. It was my inability to really feel for the characters that brought this one down a little. I am definitely still looking forward to the next book in the series, Shaken, Not Stirred.

Blog Tour Excerpt: Turtle Bay by Tiffany King

Today, I am hosting the blog tour for Turtle Bay by Tiffany King. I am excited to share this excerpt with you guys and I hope you check out the book!

~Excerpt~

We passed several patrol officers who all smiled as we headed for the door. I laughed with glee as Josh pulled me outside and we became soaked immediately, but I didn't care. I tilted up my battered face, twirling around as the rain cascaded down me, rinsing the stickiness from my skin. It felt so good to be out of the stifling building. Opening my one good eye, I saw that Josh was watching me intently.
"What?" I asked self-consciously, feeling like I should cover the half of my face that was swollen.
"You're so damn beautiful."
"I'm a mess," I said, ducking my head.
"Beautiful," he repeated, reaching a hand out to stroke my cheek.
I shivered as goose bumps that had nothing to do with the rain popped up on my arms. We were crazy to be standing out in the middle of a hurricane, but it felt exhilarating. "You're not too shabby yourself," I said, watching with hooded eyes as he lowered his mouth to mine. The wind continued to howl around us and the rain poured down in buckets, but we were lost in our own world as his tongue gently teased its way past my lips.
I lost track of how long we stood there. Maybe it was only a moment or it could have been an hour. Only when the sound of wood being split snagged our attention, did we finally come up for air. Another tree had snapped, not thirty feet from where we stood.

~Synopsis~

If you're a teenager in a small, rural area, how do you exist when your eccentric, free-spirited parents are the town freaks everyone laughs at?

For sixteen-year-old Rainbow Honeywell—or Rain, as she insists on being called—the answer was to become the queen of all pranks. She never wanted to be a troublemaker, but the label quickly stuck when everyone in Huntsville, Kansas, became a target. All she wanted was to deflect the negative attention off her parents, but Rain's plan backfired to the max, landing her in a heap of trouble with the local authorities and expelled from high school.

An unexpected inheritance offers Rain an opportunity for a new beginning when she and her family move across the country to the quaint beach community of Turtle Bay, Florida.

Determined to make the best of her second chance, Rain vows to walk the straight and narrow, hoping her parents will fly under the radar while she soaks up some fun in the sun, sandy beaches, and hot, tanned guys. Unfortunately, she picks the wrong new friends, and a late night party lands her back in the kind of trouble she had been hoping to avoid. As the newbie in town with a record, Rain takes the brunt of the punishment when an unforgiving judge chooses to make an example out of her and slaps her with enough community service hours to keep her busy until she is old and gray.

Facing the harsh reality of paying for the actions of others while atoning for her own past sins, Rain is paired up with Josh Shaw, a judgmental local lifeguard whose love for the beach and the environment is eclipsed only by his distaste for those who trash it. As far as Josh is concerned, Rain is guilty and got what she deserved, regardless of her side of the story. To make matters worse, a tropical storm sits in the Atlantic, threatening to wreak havoc on the small beach community.

Things slowly change as Rain begins to appreciate her surroundings through Josh's eyes, proving she is not the person he thinks she is. Their feelings for one another blossom as the tropical storm grows into a hurricane and bears down on Turtle Bay. With impending danger looming, the small beach community must come together in order to ride out the storm.

Saturday @ Starbucks: Slammed & Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover

It's been a long while since I've done a Saturday @ Starbucks post but I'm excited to have it back! I've been doing a lot of re-reading lately and I think I'd like to do it more regularly so I plan on recapping them and this feature will highlight a favorite book of mine that I was compelled to read again.

Drink of the Day: Caramel Apple Spice
It's Spring in Seattle which means rainy days. One of the my favorite things about rainy days is a warm drink and a book on the couch. The caramel apple spice is the perfect drink. It has the cider taste but the caramel adds the perfect sweetness to balance the tartness of the cider spices.

Re-Read Recap: Slammed and Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover

The Slammed Series is one of my favorites and my absolute favorite Colleen Hoover series. Slammed itself is atop my all time favorites. After I read Confess, I was in the mood for more Colleen Hoover and decided to re-read this one. It was on a rainy and windy day that I spent getting re-acquainted with Will and Lake. It brought back all the feels!

When Will and Layken meet it is an immediate connection. Will is smart, reliable, kind, sexy. Also, he rights kick ass slam poems. I've never been a big fan of poetry but I became one after this book. I found slam poetry to be fascinating and exciting. I liked how real and down to earth Layken was. I didn't always agree with her decisions and didn't always like the way she handled things. However, I think love blinds you and makes you act in ways that you wouldn't normally. Layken's mom, Julia, was amazing and raised great children in Layken and Kel. I loved the way she welcomed Will and Caulder into their family. Will and Lake go through a lot in their relationship and have some pretty big ups and downs. They both have a lot of responsibility at a young age and I think the added stress played a huge part in that. In Slammed, we watched their relationship blossom and in Point of Retreat it grew and developed.

When I first met him I resisted. Like any forbidden love, I told myself he was a crush, and it would pass. That was a lie. It never faded.
And I never expected he would fall for me just as hard. There were so many reasons that should have kept us apart, least of all, the decade that separated us. Growing up in New York City, I learned early on that love is a double-edged sword. Now I'm heading to college, and it's time to give love a clean slate again. But, can I really start over when he's still in my life? Because the one man I've always wanted, is also the only guy I absolutely can't have… And he wants me just as fiercely.

"I'll love you forever. Even when I can't"~ Review: Confess by Colleen Hoover

Author: Colleen Hoover
Publication Date: March 10, 2015
Publisher: Atria Books
Source: Purchased via Amazon

~Synopsis~
Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn't expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover Owen is keeping major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…

~Review~

I was mesmerized by this book. It brought out all of the feels. All of the feels that only Colleen Hoover can evoke with her writing. This book was hauntingly beautiful and the writing once again reached down and touched my soul. Owen and Auburn had a connection that touched my heart.

While I didn't always agree with some of the decisions that Auburn or Owen made, I recognize that this is what makes them human and it was easy for me to relate. Auburn has been through so much in her young life and my heart broke for her. I mean it was shattered in the very beginning. I had tears streaming down my face before the prologue was even finished. I could feel her despair coming of the pages. Colleen does such an amazing job invoking feelings. I felt like my heart ache when Auburn or Owen's. I felt relieved when Auburn and Owen did. I felt excited and nervous when Auburn and Owen did.

Another thing that I absolutely loved about this book was Colleen's collaboration with the artist to create the paintings that Owen did so we could see what brought out Auburn's emotions and reaction. Owen's inspiration for the paintings was unique and creative. Owen is connected to Auburn, he knows who she is and she has no idea. I loved the way Colleen played that because I was intrigued, wanting to know how he knew her. Colleen knows how to keep me guessing and continuously surprising me. She keeps her secrets locked tight away and I never see the revelations before I'm hit with the surprise.

Once again, Colleen Hoover has created a masterpiece so real, I feel like I'm a bystander in these character's lives. I also love when I am able to read a book and put together a soundtrack full of songs that really resonate with my while I read. I can relate the songs to scenes in the book and I love that.

Journey back through time: Recapping some Re-reads

Last week, I wrote a post about re-reading and the fact that I've been doing it a lot lately. I decided to do some weekly recap posts, preferably on Saturdays. However, I didn't get a chance to write my post this past weekend.

Over the last couple weeks, I have re-read a couple of my favorite series and I wanted to share some quick thoughts on my feelings for these books with a little recap.

The Lost & Found Series
by Nicole Williams

This series is one of the greatest contemporary romances that I've ever read. Rowen Sterling and Jesse Walker were the first characters I ever met that defied all of the romance cliche's. Instead of a good girl meets bad boy, this was a good boy meets a bad girl and I loved it. Rowen is the hurt, confused and angry character and Jesse is the uplifting one. The one who gets Rowen to open up her heart and become a better person. Now Garth Black and Josie Gibson are your typical bad boy/good girl combination but Josie isn't a timid, shy girl. She isn't afraid to tell Garth how it is or kick him in the ass. Garth Black will never change but he'll always be good enough for Josie.

Sexy, hot cowboys and set in Montana, this series will make you want to visit a ranch and meet a cowboy of your own. The fourth book in this series, Losers Weepers, was released on February 24, 2015.
The Velesi Trilogy
by L. Filloon

I read The Velesi Trilogy before I became a blogger but this series was one that I was unsure about at first but became instantly hooked the moment I started it. I didn't know if I would enjoy a fantasy novel about elves but the backstory and world building in these books was fantastic. Living in San Diego, Lily has no idea that she is the future Queen of the Velesi realm when her betrothed, Prince Tharin shows up to bring her back to marry him. I loved the way she discovered her heritage and accepted her calling. It was tough for Lily to give up the only life she's known and have no choice in her future. There was also a lot of action in this series and I felt like the author balanced action and romance really well. I really enjoyed the plot and I felt like the author really developed the characters. I loved the ones I was supposed to love and I hated the ones I was supposed to hate.

If you're a fan of fantasy novels, I highly recommend this series. Sometimes when you read a book for the second time, you find the writing to be different or you find the plot holes you didn't see before. However, I enjoyed this series just as much the second time as I did the first.

Next week, check back for my re-read recap of the Slammed Series by Colleen Hoover.

Cover Reveal: Heart's Desire by T.J. Kline

HEART’S DESIRE by T.J. Kline

The Healing Hart Series:

The Healing Harts series came to me one night as I was just falling asleep. It jerked me awake, making me sit up in bed. It was one of those ideas that came completely formulated, an entire series, like a lightning bolt to the brain, and I haven’t been able to shake loose of it until it was written down. A family, rocked by loss, each member with a desire to help others in their own way.

In the first book, Heart’s Desire, Jessie is faced with running the family dude ranch alone after her parent’s unexpected death. Unbeknownst to her siblings, she and her father were transitioning the ranch to an abused horse rescue facility but she’s floundering to keep it afloat and bankruptcy is looming. Her brother, Justin, decides it’s time to call his college buddy, Nathan Kerrington, for help – the same man who shattered her heart eight years earlier.

Nathan Kerrington knows he hurt Jessie but he had a good reason for it. Now he just has to prove that to her and regain her trust. But, as old hurts rise to the surface, they must resolve their past before they can attempt to save her future and some hurts aren’t easily forgiven.

Choosing the cover for HEART’S DESIRE

When we started looking for covers for Jessie and Nathan’s story, I had a very clear picture in my mind. I knew exactly what my characters look like and the feel I wanted for the series as a whole. We had also decided very early to go with only the main characters on these books. I also knew that while all three books should tie together, I wanted Jet, one of Jessie’s horses, on the cover somewhere. He plays an important part in discovering herself at different points in the story.

But Jessie is such a strong, independent character, she fought me at every step, whether it was in the first draft or the final cover. We went through several pictures and many would have worked with the mood of the book but there was always something that didn’t suit Jessie’s personality. Again, Jessie was determined to have her own way.

In the end, she chose her own photo. As soon as I saw it, I knew this was Jessie and there was no need to look further for a cover photo. This cover portrays Jessie’s character better than words – pensive, wistful and ambitious. The fact that Jet was able to be part of this cover was the icing on the cake for me.

~Excerpt~

"I came to apologize, Jess. I shouldn't have said those things."
She ignored the way her nickname slid easily from his lips or the way it made her heart trip over her ribs and start fluttering like a baby bird learning to take flight. She'd quit buying into romantic notions a long time ago thanks to him. Now, if only she could convince her body to let them go. She set the rake against the wall and walked into the aisle way.
"It's Jessie. Jessie. We are not friends, remember?"
His green eyes flashed, the golden flecks lighting them from within, and she saw frustration in the set of his jaw. "No?"
"No. Let's keep our roles in perspective. You're the financial genius here to do a favor for my brother, and I'm just his idiot little sister who bought your load of crap years ago and can't manage to keep this ranch afloat now."
His long strides ate the distance between them in seconds but she stood her ground, staring up at him, daring him to argue. His lips were tight, set in a grim line and a deep crease lined his perfect brow. She wanted to back away, but years of working with her father wouldn't allow her to show any signs of intimidation. Cowgirl up, she recited the mantra in her head, although not nearly as confidently as she usually did.
"Don't do that," he ordered, staring down into her eyes, his voice quiet but insistent.
She could feel the heat emanating from him as sparks of desires burst in her chest, sending shivers over her skin. She tried to control it, to stop herself from trembling at his nearness but she couldn't stop her breath from catching in her throat. "Don't do what?" Her voice was a hoarse whisper.
"Don't belittle yourself. You are far more than that. You've always been more than that to me." His hands grasped her upper arms and he dipped his head toward her, his eyes never leaving hers. "You're a talented, kind, giving, passionate woman."
It wasn't what Jessie expected. His words were a balm to her chapped and aching heart, exactly what she needed to hear, but she knew she couldn't let him break past her walls. Who knew what damage he could cause her heart when he left again. She'd barely managed to piece together the shards last time. She pressed her hands against his chest, intending to push him away from her, but he gently circled her wrists with his fingers. Their eyes locked and she refused to be the first to look away.
"Nathan." She meant for it to be a warning but it came out sounding more like a plea.
"What, Jess?"
He placed his palms over the back of her hands and twined his fingers between hers. His touch made her weak and she felt a wave of need break over her, threatening to drown her. She'd been so in love with him, and it had left a gaping hole in her, one she’d never managed to fill, not even with her work.
Nathan walked her backward until she felt the stall behind her. With the hard wall of his body pressing against the front of her, pinning their hands between them, there was nowhere for her to escape the explosion of yearning that began in the middle of her chest, spreading outward, heating her and leaving her breathless. Every inhalation filled her with the scent of his expensive cologne, reminding her again how out of place he was. He didn't belong here. But seeing the desire in his eyes, feeling it in every inch of him pressing up against her, made Jessie want to wrap her legs around his waist and let him take her right here in the barn.
She couldn't possibly feel this way about him again. She couldn’t imagine feeling any other way about him. She needed this man. Not just wanted him, needed him, and that scared the crap out of her.
He was going to kiss her, and she was going to melt under his touch. There was no doubt in her mind. If that happened, she was a goner. Because, for her, this wasn't about sex, this was about how Nathan made her feel, how he'd always made her feel - understood and validated and worthy. The only other time Jessie felt that way was when she worked with her horses.
How had this man recognized the weakness in her, buried deeply, and unearthed it so easily? Panic set in. She had to protect herself. She couldn't let Nathan in, couldn't let him get close again. She shoved against his hands, using her body to knock him off balance, backward against the handles of the wheelbarrow and into the bucket.
"You can finish the stalls."
She ran out of the barn, refusing to look back at the man trying to piece together a full sentence from where he landed, inside a wheelbarrow full of fresh horse manure.

March: A month for Re-Reads

Source: Pintrest

Lately I have been feeling a bit nostalgic and going back to some favorites. Because of my long term absence from blogging, I have a lot of catch up reviews to write. So, I decided to spend the month of March re-reading books and series that I absolutely love. At the end of each week, I'll do a recap as part of my Saturday @ Starbucks feature.

"Does unrequited love have an expiration date?"~ Review: Three Brothers by Nicole Williams

Publication Date: January 20, 2015
Genre: Contemporary
Source: Purchased via Amazon

~Synopsis~

I grew up with three brothers. They weren’t tied to me by blood, but our connection went beyond genetics or bearing the same last name. Our connection was forged the summer I turned thirteen, the summer my mom ended her life and left me in the custody of John Armstrong, a man I’d never met. Packing all I owned in a couple of boxes, I left the familiarity of the big city and headed west to Red Mountain Ranch, set in a lonely valley outside of Jackson Hole.

Nothing was as it seemed at Red Mountain—it didn’t take long for me to figure that out. John was kind to me but distant, as if he was afraid to let anyone get too close. His three teenage sons had their own devices for keeping love as far away as they could. The eldest distracted himself with cheap relationships that had a shelf-life of one night. The middle son threw himself into the rigor of running a ranch, and the third wielded cruelty and mind-games in his quest to keep people from getting close.

Time has gone by, and I’ve spent those years trying to forget the brother I’d fallen for—the biggest mistake of my life.

Finally, I’ve moved on. Finally, I’m back. But what I didn’t realize was that running away from the wrong brother meant I’d also run away from the right one. The one who’d been there for me all along, waiting in his brother’s shadow for the day I either would or could move on.

But a decade is a long time to wait. Has the brother I should have chosen all of those years ago moved on too? Am I about to discover that my biggest mistake wasn’t falling in love with the wrong brother, but failing to return the love of the right one sooner?

Does unrequited love have an expiration date?

I’m about to find out.

~Review~

Nicole Williams amazes me. I've never been disappointed in a book of hers that I've read. Three Brothers was a nice surprise and another heart warming ranch story. I love her Lost & Found series, so I was excited for some more cowboys. She makes me want to move to Montana or Wyoming!

Scout was raised by John Armstrong from the age of 12 and grew up with his 3 sons. Each one played a vital role in her life, Chase was the big brother, Chance was her best friend and Conn was the one she loved. However, Conn had a hard time loving anyone and his destructive behavior caused Scout to leave as soon as she turned 18. After finishing Vet school, she finally returns to say goodbye to someone she loves. Her return home reveals secrets lies and tragedy but she also finds the love she's always been looking for.

I liked Scout and I loved the development of her character. She went through a lot as a young girl and it definitely made her vulnerable but I loved that she went out on her own and came back stronger. She was able to face her demons head on and not back down even though that's all she wanted to do.

I liked the relationship she had with Chase and the big brother/little sister relationship they had. When Scout came back, she found Chase to be a very different man and she helped him find himself again. I also felt that her relationship with Conn was well done. It's definitely not an easy one and was very volatile but I felt like Nicole wrote it very well. I felt the tension and the emotions that Conn and Scout felt in each other's presence. Lastly, her relationship with Chance was beautiful. They have such an easy time together and the friendship they built was so easy, even after years without seeing each other.

This book had drama, laughter, mystery and an all together well written story, I flew through this book with ease and I was actually disappointed when it was over. If you're a fan of contemporary romance, I highly recommend this book.
