Saturday @ Starbucks #12: Discussing New Adult with a Mocha

Saturday @ Starbucks is a weekly feature hosted by Starbucks & Books Obsession.

To join in, just re-post the topic and  link back to the host. Grab a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate and do a post on the topic.

This week's topic is:
Discussing New Adult Novels & a Mocha

Drink of the Week: Cafe Mocha
I am usually not a huge mocha fan because I am not a big chocolate person and a mocha is super sweet. However, every once in a while I like to indulge myself and have one. Chocolate and coffee go well together and balance each other.

Book Topic: Discussing New Adult Novels

I love new adult novels and it has quickly become one of my favorite genres. New adult is a new genre where the characters are generally in there early to mid twenties and usually in college or are college age. They generally build their plot around a tough topic such as sexual assault, suicide, drugs and alcohol abuse, etc. They also involve more mature romances than young adult novels. I think I have become fascinated with new adult novels because the characters are closer to my age and I can relate with the place that the characters are in their lives. I also have an admitted guilty pleasure with blush-able books and many new adult novels fall into that category.

One thing I have noticed about new adult books is the popular topic of sexual assault. That is why I love when I read a book where the author handles it in a unique way.

I also really like reading a new adult novel that involves a topic that I haven't come across yet. This instantly intrigues me because a new topic is nice once and a while.

While some of my favorite new adult novels involve sexual assault as the tough topic, I feel like it is the go to topic for new adult authors and it has become a little cliche. I think each author puts their own twist on the plot and builds their own character arcs but the topic itself is a bit overdone for me. That being said, I have found that I am starting to really enjoy NA novels that go outside the box and deal with one of the other "tough topic" issues out there.

All in all, I have loved almost every new adult novel that I have read and 90% of the books I am reading and reviewing are in the new adult genre. Looking at my TBR, I don't think I will run out of any new adult novels to read for a long time.

What about you? Have you fallen in love with the new adult genre too? What are some of your favorite "tough topics"? What are some of your favorite new adult novels?

  1. I also love new adult books! I agree that I can relate to them better as I am in my twenties and I find the tough subjects very interesting and gives some added depth to the stories. However I have only read 1 of the books you mentioned, so I need to get reading!

  2. I have read a few NA books lately, and I have noticed that my TBR is filling up with much more. I haven't read any of the books you mention, but they are all on my shelves, and I actually own Easy. I guess I just need a few extra hours every day so taht I can actually read those soon ;)

And now, I really feel like running downtown (or taking the car, actually) to get myself a coffee mocha! Yum!

  3. Easy is one of my favorites this year. I had bought it and had it on my kindle for a while before I read it and I wish I had read it sooner. I loved it. I need a lot more hours in a day :-) Starbucks is the first place I go on a Saturday morning, as soon as I jump out of bed!

  5. I love NA, I think it's my favourite genre right now. It's not an age thing with me as I'm well past that age group but it's such an interesting part of life. It really is the period that can define the rest of your life so it's full of potential.
Also these books tend to put me through the emotional wringer and for some reason I love this.
My favourite is Hopeless and as for topics, I don't really have a favourite. I just like 'issues' full stop.

  6. NA is definitely my favorite genre right now. I totally agree that the time in the character's life is when they are finding themselves and I love that. I don't know why I like to do it to myself but the emotional wringer is one of the reasons I love it too. :-) Hopeless is amazing!

  7. I love NA too, and I like to see the author handle it correctly, sexual assault is more common in college then most realize. My niece was violated, and its so important to handle it correctly.

  8. I couldn't imagine if that happened to me or someone I know. You are so right, it happens way more than we realize. I think so many women think it can never happen to them and we don't realize how often it happens. It is such a sensitive and real subject that it has to be handled correctly. I think that is why I loved Easy, because Tammara Webber handles it with such female empowerment. I think sometimes reading about it too much gets to me a little because it is so real and a fear that I have. Thank you so much for sharing.
